#20Twenty with... S.J. Thomas

I am delighted to welcome S.J. Thomas back onto my blog today, author of Oh Christmas Tree (as featured here in the Countdown to Christmas), Alpha Chase, and One Wild Vegas Night, all published by Breathless Press, as well as a number of anthologies.

I am quite excited by the prospect of getting to know Ms Thomas – ooh, doesn’t that sound formal! – that little better so I’ve ditched the usual hotseat in favour of a comfy couch today, and just hope my guest can stay awake for the entire round of twenty questions…

ACT ONE – all about you…

Writing sizzling paranormal romance and erotica and dark paranormal horror SJ Thomas has been published in several anthologies and had her first stand alone novellas published in 2012. She reads, writes, and breathes sexy possessive paranormal creatures and the heroines (or heroes) that bring them to their knees. SJ lives in the South West of England with her wonderful husband and a very spoilt Springer Spaniel and she has a full time day job so has to fit her writing in when she can, but of course would love to write full time one day. When not writing or working she enjoys reading, walking, geocaching, and surfing badly.

1) Have you always been a writer or is it something you fell into?

Firstly thanks for having me and I am glad we went for the comfy couch!

Anyway writing is definitely something I fell into and only in the last couple of years. I've always had an active imagination and fancied writing when I was about 16 but I honestly didn't think I could come up with anything original. It was reading an interview with Gena Showalter and Kresley Cole about their inspiration/inklings for stories that made me remember the ideas I'd had when I was 16 and I started writing again.

2) Do you have a particular writing style or ritual?

Working full time means a very irregular writing pattern. I work in my living room on the Macbook, normally when my hubby is on the Playstation, so I always put my headphones in and listen to music. I have several playlists depending on what mood I am writing.

Style wise I try to start at the beginning and work my way through but sometimes I'll start with a particularly scene and back fill from there.

3) Is there a book or an author that has particularly influenced you in your writing?

The joint goddesses of paranormal romance, Gena Showalter and Kresley Cole. I have always leaned toward fantasy, vampires, werewolves in my reading but it wasn't until I discovered Gena's Lords of the Underworld that I actually realised there was a genre called paranormal romance.

4) Is there one piece of writing (or life?) advice that has stuck with you, or that you would like to share?

Just sit down and write. Even if it’s a few words or a whole scene, just start. First drafts are normally rubbish but that’s the beauty of editing and rewrites. Unless you get it down to begin with you'll never get anywhere with it.

Oh and try to avoid negative reviews!!

5) Can you tell us three things about yourself that we probably don’t already know?

1 - I have three Degrees, one Undergraduate and two Masters.

2 – I once did a hot air balloon flight over the Nile for my mum's 50th birthday.

3 - We have two pet lizards, a Blue Tongue Skink called Charlie and a Chinese Water Dragon called Sly.

6) What five luxury items or gadgets would you hate to be without?

1 - Kindle

2 - Sky TV (major Spartacus, Game of Thrones, Arrow and Hawaii Five O fan)

3 - Straighteners

4 – Central Heating

5 - Ipod

ACT TWO – all about your stories…

7) Congratulations on your recent release of Hot Flashes, featuring not one, not two, but three of your short stories, but what exactly is a “hot flash”?

Thanks. Flash fiction is a short piece of fiction anywhere from 200 – 1000 words to give you a tantalising taste of a story. It’s a brilliant writing exercise and the Breathless Press author group do them regularly, often inspired by an image, for the blog and Facebook page. Someone had the idea of doing an anthology and we now have two out; Freaky Flashes all of which have a sexy Halloween theme and Hot Flashes, which ahem speak for themselves.

8) I see that you have a flair for paranormal and sci-fi fiction, so where do you draw your inspiration from?

Anywhere – tv, books, images, films. Everything I write has a paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy flavour because it's what I like to read and what I like to write. I normally get an idea or image of a scene of piece of dialogue and then from there build the story, asking the what's and why's.

9) I also see that you have written short stories for a number of anthologies, was this a conscious decision or something that just happened?

Something that just happened. When I first started writing I was aiming for a full length novel but Candy Crum, a wonderful indie author, put out a call via Facebook for a paranormal horror anthology, the Withering Darkness. I had a go and my story Winter King got accepted and was my first ever published work. (It also happens to feature my all time favourite character, Malum, who had a follow up story in the second anthology Candy published and who I am determined will have a full length story one day!).

The first few things I had published were all anthology shorts and it turns out they were a brilliant way to practice my skills and learn the craft. I am trying to move away from short stories and get a full length novel out, but I am sure I will be tempted again.

10) Out of all the stories you have had published, do you have a favourite paragraph or sentence, that you would like to tantalise us with?

Oooh hard.

The story that has the most meaning for me is my werewolf novella Alpha Chase because to date it the longest story I have written, it was one of the first complete stories I wrote, and it received a rejection from one publisher before finding a home with Breathless. There are several lines/paragraphs I love but my favourite has got to be this one:

She was not going to be intimidated, even when she was flat on her back with a pissed-off werewolf on top of her.

11) Over to you, what can you tell us about your stories, to make us rush out and buy one, and which one would you recommend trying first?

My romance/erotica features strong alpha males, feisty heroines, heart-stopping action and sizzling sex. The characters don't always play nice but they will give you a hell of a ride.

My horror will linger with you long after you finish the story and will send a shiver up your spine.

To get a feel for my writing any of the anthologies would be a good place to start particularly Ravaged, Dark Hunger or Sinister Seductions.

If you fancy something longer I have the best reviews for Alpha Chase and Oh Christmas Tree so they are probably both my strongest writing.

12) What can we expect from you next? Is there something you are working on right now?

I have just contracted a novella with Breathless Press for their Naughty Nursery Rhyme line. It’s based on they nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle and is a bit Alice in Wonderlandish with a very sexy anti-hero and lots of sizzling…erm…situations!

I am also waiting to hear on a submission to a new publisher and I have a short story I am expanding for another Breathless anthology.

After they are done I will be working on another Naughty Nursery Rhyme based on Little Red Riding Hood and a full-length sequel to Alpha Chase.

QUICK FIRE ROUND – it’s pop quiz time…

13) Plotter or pantser?

Half and half

14) Secret Seven or Famous Five? (please tell me you know them!?)

Err sorry don't really know either. Can I choose the Avengers?

15) Digital books or print books?

In my heart print, in my head digital

16) Tea or coffee?

Tea

17) Cats or dogs?

Dogs

18) Extrovert or introvert?

Confident introvert

19) Save or spend?

Try to save but normally spend

20) Facebook or Twitter?

Facebook

And that’s a wrap!

Thank you so much for taking part, I wish you every success with your stories and hope a certain other impending new release of the biological kind doesn’t wear you out too much.

Thanks for having me, it's been lots of fun.

SERVICED: Riding Out the Storm by Natalia Petrovskii

Following the release of Serviced on March 1st, I am running a daily spotlight for each of the stories featured in this hot new military-themed anthology from Breathless Press...

Riding Out The Storm
by Natalia Petrovskii

Corporal Anna Jordan keeps her secret fantasies about her superior officer, Lieutenant Kyle Campbell, well hidden. When the two must take shelter from a winter storm during a training exercise she has no idea her wildest dreams are about to come true!

Excerpt...

"Do I make you nervous, corporal?" he asked softly.

She glanced at him in surprise. "No sir!" she said quickly, but she didn’t sound convincing even to herself.

"Well you seem nervous, you're shaking like crazy. I don't bite, Jordan, I promise," he said, a smile curving his lips.

The mental image flashing through her mind of his mouth and teeth on her skin biting and sucking was so vivid that without thinking she laughed.

"Oh, I doubt that, sir." She gasped and glanced up at him, horrified. Her little slip didn't seem to faze him; in fact, he was smiling at her. Anna smiled back.

He cleared his throat, "Jordan, you know I shouldn't say this, that we shouldn't get into this, but you're freezing, I'm freezing, and it is only going to get colder. We need to stay warm. Question is, what do we want to do about that?" She thought about that question for all of two seconds. His meaning was crystal clear and frankly, she couldn't think of a better way to heat things up.

SERVICED: Taking Command by Zara Stoneley

Following the release of Serviced on March 1st, I am running a daily spotlight for each of the stories featured in this hot new military-themed anthology from Breathless Press...

Taking Command
by Zara Stoneley

Mike Sands knows that loving a soldier can lead to heartache, so when he falls hard for his best mates little sister he knows he has to walk away.
But can Jade let him, when one taste has left her desperate for more? Or dare she take command of the situation and prove to both of them that maybe what they have is worth taking a risk over?
Sometimes one night of passion is not enough, sometimes you just have to stop thinking about the future and live in the present.

Excerpt...

She ran her tongue over her generous mouth, and smiled, so slow and so deliberate that he felt his mouth dry up like he was tasting dust.

"Six months ago, you gave me what I wanted, Mike, what we both wanted, just before you ran away." Her lips parted and she dipped one finger deep into the soft warm depths of her mouth, drew it out slowly, her cheeks hollowing. Just the way she'd look as she sucked his aching dick. "I still want you and I think you still want me, don't you?" The husky voice snaked straight down his body to his aching balls.

"You wouldn't believe how much I want you." He swallowed hard. "But, I should never have touched you." He should never have touched her, and he should never have left her. Shit, if she carried on doing that, he'd be coming. He shouldn't have kissed her; he shouldn't have wrapped his arm around that firm ass and pulled her in tight so that her breasts rubbed against his shoulder. He shouldn't have run his hand up the inside of her creamy thigh. Even though he wanted her so much it hurt, and she knew, they knew each other so well. Too well. Maybe, just maybe nothing would happen to him...and maybe she was strong enough to cope if it did. Jade wasn't his mum, Jade was unique.

The string of rational thought shattered and his stomach clenched as she stepped closer, leaned down, and ran her tongue over his lips. She teased at his mouth with her teeth, pulling just short of pain, and he groaned. Control had always been hard here, in his safe place, with people he trusted. Here he let down his guard.

"I think you should. I want you, Mike."

The sweet musk of her arousal teased at his senses; she was wet, he knew she was sopping wet, if only he could reach out, slip his fingers between her legs. Her tongue dipped into his mouth, slid along his teeth, and then she was sucking on his tongue, gentle persistent sucks that sent a new rush of blood to his groin. Just as the ache in his balls started to mess with his head she stopped.

"And I'm going to have you."

A Chance At Love
by Shelli Rosewarne

Corporal Aidan Hamilton has the unenviable job of telling his best friend’s sister that her brother isn’t coming back. This is slightly complicated by the fact that from the moment he meets Suzanne Kelsey he knows she’s everything he’s ever wanted. While Suzanne might need someone to lean on at the moment, can he convince her that what they have is more than a short term fling?
Suzanne had always told her big brother that being a soldier was too dangerous, so when she sees the uniformed officer in front of her house she knows exactly what he’s here to tell her. While Aidan may set her blood on fire, Suzanne has already lost one soldier she loved and she’s not prepared to trust her heart to another one.

Excerpt...

He'd moved closer and she could feel the heat of his leg pressing against her side through the thin covers.

"I should probably go," he muttered.

She felt a stab of panic—she didn't want to be alone. In fact, she thought suddenly, eying up the tanned chest that was so close to her now, what she needed was a distraction. A really good distraction. In fact, a six-foot, half-naked, almost in her bed already, distraction. She reached out her hand and lightly stroked it over his chest, feeling him tense, the muscles clenching under her touch. She met his gaze, seeing desire warring with restraint. Well, one would have to go, she thought, with a half-smile.

She leaned forward, bracing her hand on his chest, to lightly brush her lips across his. They were soft and warm. She felt him shift as though to pull back and she ran her other hand into the close-cropped hair at the back of his head, clutching him to her, her body now pressed against his. She ran her tongue along the seam of his lips, and he groaned.

She felt the exact moment he gave in, when his body relaxed against her, his hand slid around to her back, crushing her closer against him, and his tongue plunged into her mouth. She moaned as their tongues dueled, heat spreading through her body. Christ, he sure as hell could kiss.

Knock Out
by Natalia Petrovskii

Warrant Officer Ryan Wilson is handsome and arrogant and Corporal Nicole Muchmore enjoys taking out her frustration against him on the sparring mat. One day the tables turn and before she knows what is happening he is exacting a punishment of another kind-this time totally pleasurable.

Excerpt...

As they faced each other in a ready stance, Nicole stepped forward to strike when Wilson did something so unexpected she didn’t have time to react. With a groan of pure frustration he grabbed her by the upper arms and pushed her up against the wall. All she could do was stare at him like a deer caught in the headlights.

The close proximity suddenly made her extremely aware of his firm muscled leg between hers and his hands on her skin made the tiny hairs on her forearms prickle. His face was inches from hers, and she stared into his gray eyes in shock. To her surprise there was no arrogance, no domination, no hardness, and Nicole gasped at what she saw there.

She recognized desire when she saw it, but she had never expected to see it in him. Okay, sure she had fantasized about him on more than one occasion, but she had always assumed he disliked her, hated her even, but she could see she had been dead wrong. She had mistaken attraction for tension.

They were both still breathing hard from the rigorous workout and Nicole fought to slow her breathing down. Apparently, the surprises he had in store for her had just begun.

Major's Minah
by Raven McAllan

Oliver knew his duty, he needed a wife and heir. Minah knew what she wanted—him. Could his ideals and her dreams be the same? There was only one way to find out...

Excerpt...

As the coach turned a corner, Felix glanced at his sister. He rapped on the roof once more and the vehicle stopped.

“This is where I get out,” he said. “Oliver, you have until I return home. I will be absent until four.”

Oliver was amused at Felix’s deliberate lack of description to his words. If he intended to confuse his sister, he might well have succeeded. If he wished to annoy her, judging by her heaving bosom, and sparkling eyes, he had succeeded.

“And what, pray, does that mean?” she demanded. “What does he have?”

“Whatever you both desire, my dear. However I say now, when I return, you will either be affianced or apart. No negotiation. I trust you both to decide wisely, and that Oliver will neither coerce or use force to achieve his desires.” He opened the door, and stepped out. As he left he turned. “And nor will you, Minah.” He shut the door and the coach once more lurched forward.

“What?” she spluttered and turned to Oliver, outrage in every inch of her body. “What have you said?”

“That I have offered to be your husband if I live up to your expectations.” He leaned forward and kissed her hand, enjoying the confused emotions that crossed her face.

“Why? Why say that? Now he will have expectations we may not live up to.”

Oliver leaned toward her and tugged her arm. Unprepared, she fell, rather satisfactorily across his lap as he hoped she would, her arse in the air.

“Felix knows what I am like. I think I know what you would like. He and I would rather you decide sooner rather than later if our lifestyle is for you. He trusts me to give you the chance to find out.” Before she could reply, he lifted her skirts over her head. The beautiful pale globes with the dark recess between them were revealed in all their glory. Oliver ran his hand over each buttock, and chuckled at her muffled splutter of outrage or, he decided, supposed outrage. The quiver of her flesh, the sheen on her skin, and the liquid evident on her thighs gave lie to her indignation.

Oliver gave in to temptation and spanked her arse several times in quick succession. From under the silks came a muffled squawk and she squirmed. His cock reacted with predictable alacrity and stood to attention. Her wriggling stopped. He spanked her again, admiring the rosy glow that was beginning to show. How he would like to continue until all five fingers showed up on that milk white skin. Oliver decided it would be too much, too soon. Instead, he ran his finger down the indentation that separated her arse cheeks. He forced himself not to tease her nether hole, but merely circled it, enjoying the way her breath hitched. He was inclined to think their ideas would mesh to perfection, given a chance. A brief glance outside the window showed he needed to right her and hope she would accompany him without comment. He flicked her skirts into place and lifted her to sit upright next to him.

First Date: The Italian Colonel
by Jesabelle Jones

There are fireworks when horny English nanny, Leonie, meets squadron commander, Colonel Luca Giordano - the sex is hot, and it's only the first date.

Excerpt...

She mouthed the name to herself, feeling hotter than she had a few moments ago. She glanced at him making nice with Maria and the baby, drawing David's sister Donna into the conversation.

The Italian was very handsome. He wore civilian clothes and was tall and slim. Some might say skinny, but Leonie could tell by his muscled arms that he was strong with it. Sinuous was the word that sprang to mind. Luca wore a fitted gray T-shirt with some emblem printed on the front and had a tattoo on his arm. Leonie knew enough of Air Force life to know that it was a troop ink and it came alive as he lifted his arm to take the baby from Maria for a cuddle.

Something clenched tightly in Leonie's stomach. What was it about a strong man and a little baby that tied her in knots? As Luca lifted the baby high, the movement also lifted the T-shirt to reveal a glimpse of his toned torso above well-fitted and well-worn jeans. The knot turned into a throb as Luca grinned in response to Dylan's giggle. Leonie closed her eyes briefly behind her glasses. No, she wasn't going to do this, she rationalized. She was hot and she was horny, but only because she hadn't had a man for over a month. It had nothing to do with this Italian, with his chocolate brown eyes and eyelashes that would make an angel cry.

The only reason Leonie had been without sex for this long was due to the changeover in personnel and the fact that she'd been working so much. David had been overseas for a month, meaning Maria needed more help than usual with the baby and more overtime for Leonie. Plus the last batch of trainee pilots had finished their six-month rotation and she hadn't had a chance to scope out the newbies. There was no way she was going to get involved with this latest arrival. He was hot, but there was an arrogance about him that didn’t sit well with Leonie, even if she was getting turned on just watching him.

Will has a surprise for his wife for the tenth anniversary.
He's coming home.

Excerpt...

A smile spread over my face and I closed the door quietly behind me, setting my duffel on the floor. Unless I missed my guess, Dani was upstairs singing in the bathtub. I had dreamed of her leaping into my arms at the door, but fate had given me a better surprise. I twitched in my pants as I pulled off my boots, thinking about her with each note and splash coming from the bathroom. I padded up the stairs.

"I don’t want, anybody else. When I think about you, I touch myself..."

I bit hard on my knuckles to keep from making a sound. The first muffle was laughter. The second was a groan as I peeked through the crack in the door. Danielle was shaving her legs, careful quick strokes down each long white limb. I sighed and adjusted myself. God, she had beautiful legs. I didn’t want to startle her while she had the blade in her hand.

The whole time she kept on singing with the music. "When I’m feeling down, I want you above me." Oh, I was going to be above her all right. She was soaping her arms now and I didn’t mind giving her a little scare. I yanked the door open and she screamed, plunging her head under the water.

The Divinyls continued to touch themselves while I chortled and lunged to the tub, sitting on its edge despite the water coming over the side.

Dani's head came up at the sound of my laugh. "Will! You scared the shit out of me! Don’t you ever... You’re home!" She jumped out of the tub to hug me, knocking us both to the tiled floor.

I kept laughing, nearly as wet as she was, holding her as she kissed my face.

"You don’t have to touch yourself anymore, honey," I told her, still laughing. "I’ll be happy to do it for you."

SERVICED: Reds, Whites, and Blues by Mickey J. Corrigan

Following the release of Serviced on March 1st, I am running a daily spotlight for each of the stories featured in this hot new military-themed anthology from Breathless Press...

Reds, Whites, and Blues
by Mickey J. Corrigan

He was stationed in Key West during the Vietnam War when he met the arty girl who didn't capitalize her name. She was cute, but strange, the kind of a hippie chick who usually shunned soldiers like himself. But sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes they have sex on the beach. And sometimes you can't forget them.

Excerpt...

Was iris a hippie? She spelled her name with a small "i" and she certainly dressed hippie chick, with a patterned blue bandana holding back a tumble of long blonde hair. Bare feet, denim mini-skirt, paisley halter top that showed she didn't bother with a bra. Painting the ocean on a Wednesday afternoon? All she needed to do was pull out some dope and talk about her "old man" and Graham would've been fully convinced.

Instead, iris surprised him. She said her dad had been in the military so she was no stranger to crew cuts, pushups, Spam, and R&R. She smiled when she told him that. She had two dimples and a small pink tongue. She handed him the beer bottle and encouraged him to finish it. Her fingers were tiny, smooth shells. He liked the way her tanned fingers swept across her face, sliding the stray hairs back behind her small ears.

"I'm pretty free with my sexuality," she said.

Graham felt his neck heat up.

"I'll fuck an enlisted man just as enthusiastically as I'll fuck a radical. But the truth is, I'd just as soon hook up with one guy and make something of it. Something that means something."

He wanted to kiss her, but he was afraid. He watched a brown pelican dive straight into the receding tide. Within milliseconds, the huge bird was soaring up in the air with a fish clamped tight in its voluminous bill.
